ABS accumulator (likely what you meant by “accunulator abs”) is the high-pressure hydraulic reservoir used in certain integral anti-lock braking systems (ABS).

 

What it is

It is a sealed metal canister (often spherical, sometimes nicknamed the “bomb” or “ball”) that stores pressurized brake fluid. Inside is a rubber bladder or diaphragm pre-charged with nitrogen gas. The bladder keeps the nitrogen separate from the brake fluid.

Typical operating pressures are very high—often in the 2,000–2,600 PSI range (pre-charge around 750 PSI on older Teves Mark II systems, depending on the vehicle).

 

How it works

1.  An electric pump forces brake fluid into the accumulator.

2.  This compresses the nitrogen bladder and stores hydraulic energy.

3.  When the ABS system needs rapid pressure changes (to prevent wheel lock-up), it draws from this stored high-pressure fluid so the brakes can respond almost instantly without waiting for the pump alone.

It also helps smooth pressure spikes and supply extra fluid for power-assisted braking in these systems.

 

Where it is used

Primarily on older integral ABS setups from roughly the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, including:

  Many GM cars (Buick Riviera/Reatta, Cadillac Eldorado/Seville, Oldsmobile Toronado)

  Some Fords (Thunderbird, Lincoln Continental/Mark VII, Mercury Cougar)

  Certain European models (Saab 900/9000, Volvo 480, Jaguar XJ6, etc.)

Modern ABS modules usually integrate the accumulator function differently or use different designs, so this discrete spherical unit is less common on newer vehicles.

 

Common issues

Failure (loss of nitrogen charge, bladder rupture, or internal leaks) often triggers ABS warning lights, hard/soft pedal feel, or loss of power assist. Replacement typically requires special tools and careful depressurization because of the high pressure involved.
