Koomey (or Koomey unit) refers to a hydraulic accumulator control system used in the oil & gas drilling industry.

What it is

A Koomey unit (also called a BOP accumulator unit or closing unit) is a skid-mounted hydraulic power system that supplies high-pressure fluid to operate Blowout Preventers (BOPs) and related well-control equipment.

It was invented by Paul Koomey and became so widely used that “Koomey” turned into a generic industry term for this type of BOP control unit.

Main function

• Stores pressurized hydraulic fluid in accumulator bottles (typically nitrogen-precharged).

• Instantly delivers high-volume hydraulic power to open or close ram BOPs, annular preventers, and hydraulic valves — especially in emergency well-control situations.

• Ensures the BOP stack can still function even if the main pumps or electrical power fail.

Key components

• Accumulator bottles (store energy)

• Electric and/or air-driven pumps (to charge the system, usually to ~3,000 psi)

• Reservoir tank

• Control manifold and valves

• Pressure gauges and regulators

In short: the Koomey unit is the critical backup hydraulic power source that allows drillers to quickly shut in a well and prevent a blowout.
