Clutch function (in a vehicle)
The clutch is a mechanical device that connects and disconnects the engine from the transmission (gearbox).
Main functions
• Engages and disengages power flow — It allows the engine to keep running while the vehicle is stationary, and transfers engine torque to the transmission when you want to move.
• Enables smooth gear changes — By temporarily interrupting power, it lets you shift gears without grinding the gear teeth.
• Allows controlled starts — When moving off from a stop, it gradually applies engine power to the wheels so the car accelerates smoothly instead of stalling or jerking.
• Protects the drivetrain — It absorbs some shock and prevents excessive wear on the transmission and engine during engagement.
How it works (simplified)
• Pedal pressed (disengaged): The clutch plates separate → engine spins freely, no power goes to the wheels.
• Pedal released (engaged): The plates are pressed together by spring force → engine power is transmitted through the transmission to the wheels.
In manual-transmission cars the driver operates the clutch with a pedal. In many automatic and dual-clutch transmissions the clutch (or multiple clutches) is controlled automatically by the vehicle’s computer and hydraulic/electronic actuators.
