How Hydraulic Accumulators Work
(Piston, Bladder, Diaphragm / Gas-Charged Types)
A hydraulic accumulator is a pressure vessel that plays multiple essential roles in a hydraulic system. It maintains system pressure, stores and recovers energy, reduces pressure peaks, supports chassis suspension systems, and dampens shock, vibration, and pulsations.
Operating Principle
Under pre-charged gas pressure (typically nitrogen), the accumulator stores a volume of hydraulic fluid that can be released back into the system when needed.
• When system pressure rises, fluid enters the accumulator and compresses the gas.
• When system pressure drops, the compressed gas expands and forces the stored fluid back into the hydraulic circuit.
This simple yet effective energy-storage mechanism allows the accumulator to respond almost instantly to changing demand.
