EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) is an automotive braking safety system that automatically adjusts the amount of braking force applied to each wheel (especially the rear wheels).
Main function
• Monitors and regulates brake pressure on the rear wheels.
• Improves driving stability when braking, particularly in corners or when the vehicle’s weight shifts.
How it works
When you brake, the vehicle’s weight transfers forward. This increases grip on the front wheels and reduces grip on the rear wheels. Without adjustment, the rear wheels can lock up more easily, leading to instability or a skid.
EBD uses the same wheel-speed sensors and hydraulic modulators as the ABS system to:
• Continuously calculate the optimal brake force for each axle (and sometimes each individual wheel).
• Reduce pressure to the rear brakes as needed to prevent lock-up.
• Maximize overall stopping power while keeping the vehicle stable and controllable.
It works together with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and often with ESP/ESC (Electronic Stability Program/Control). EBD acts preventively by balancing forces before a wheel starts to lock, while ABS intervenes if lock-up is imminent.
In short: EBD optimizes brake force distribution for better stability and shorter, more controlled stops under varying loads and conditions.
